Description: "Traditional music in the countries throughout the Balkan region shows peculiar characteristics. Its roots reach all the way back to ancient Greece. Throughout centuries it was influenced both by the East and the West. Yet, it has maintained its original spirit because of the rhythms and melodies that have remained closely linked with past performing practices and traditions. The lyrics, the melodies, the rhythm of this living folk tradition, continue to pulse as vibrant as ever creating new forms and shapes. This defines the beauty of the style and the many ways it is expressed.
Combining folk singing with a full orchestral band, Bilja Krstic and the Bistrik Orchestra have given a fresh lease to songs that have already had their stories told. This music, with its feeling, atmosphere, and intensity from across the Balkans, is held together and presented under the huge, all encompassing cap - the Tarpos. The songs rock in the carriages, they run through the fields, they smell of quince, they regret the loss of the beloved. They are simple and yet difficult. They are luxurious and sweet just like Tarpos - the biggest female cap in the world that comes from this region (still being prominent in the folk dresses of Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Hungary, in fact throughout the Balkan peninsula).
The music on Tarpos represents the tradition of the entire Balkan region resulting in a wonderful testimony of its music and rich history that transcend borders and divisions with their forces of promoting life and celebration together."

A superior CD full of beautiful traditional tunes from throughout the Balkans, done by one of the finest voices in all of Europe. If there are angels in heaven, my guess is that they will sound like Bilja.
