Product Details
Description: A coming-of-age tale set in Communist Yugoslavia in 1954, Tito and Me scores points for humanism by sticking close to the heart. The word "Communist," of course, means little to plump ten-year-old Zoran (Dimitrie Vojnov), who manages to apprehend basic truths about life that even totalitarianism cannot suppress. When told by his girlfriend, Jasna (Milena Vukosav) -- who towers over him by almost a foot -- that she has been chosen to tour Marshal Tito's homeland with the Communist youth brigade, the single-minded Zoran enters and wins an essay contest in order to join her. His sudden obsession with Tito is cause for concern among his extended family members, who, in their cramped Belgrade flat, live enmeshed in one another's lives, for better or for worse. It is in the boy's observations of his highly combustible but nurturing environment that the film scores. Zoran's rumpled musician father (Predrag Manojlovic), his hot-tempered ballerina mother (Anica Dobra), his kitchen-bound grandmother (Olivera Markovic), and the rest find ample opportunities to disagree on everything from national politics to bathroom etiquette, much to Zoran's fascination. Only after departing with the youth brigade on an alternately sinister and slapstick journey must he put his own character to the test. Director Goran Markovic's semiautobiographical reflections capture a time and place in the unique manner of a time capsule. Released in 1992, just before Yugoslavia's descent into civil war, the film affords a vision of the past unclouded by recent historical upheavals.
