Description: Controversial novel by Vuk Draskovic, published and banned in the late '70s in Yugoslavia.

The story starts when Muslim Osmanovic family kidnap and forcibly adopt and Islamicise the youngest son, Ilija, of the Orthodox Yugovich family. When Serb troops come on a revenge attack, they take back the wrong "son." Ilija, or Alija as he is now known, grows up unaware of his true identity. Even though Serbs took his "brother" and his "mother" is fiercely anti-Serb, he is a relatively Sarejevo urbanite who falls in love with a Serbian girl, Milica. Ethnic differences, however, lead to the couple's break up.

Alija's identity is repeatedly challenged, first with the revelation that the Osman family is just a branch of the Yugovics and secondly when he finds out who he actually is. In the Bosnian war, he meets his brother, who has grown up with a virulent anti-Muslim streak...
