Description: Trying to “catch in a web” the lively and childish spirit of Belgrade and its citizens, author Zoran Radovanov created another monograph about the Serbian capital, named “In Belgrade’s Embrace”.
“It’s a cheerful book about Belgrade, not charged with its tumultuous and long history, which wasn’t at all easy to ‘tell’. That’s where I got a great deal of help from artists, photographers, sportsmen, journalists, tourist guides, ambassadors, CEOs, and even Government Ministers Kojadinovic and Dimitrijevic… And each of them told the story from his own angle”, Radovanov says.
STRANGERS: They described Belgrade truly from their own angle. American Ambassador Michael Polt fell in love with walking around Kalemegdan and beautiful blue Danube and Sava rivers, while the Director of Belgrade Opera Claudio del Monaco likes the hearty Belgraders and the beautiful women of Belgrade, who leave the strangers stunned, but the Serbs indifferent.
“Music, natural beauty, and love you can always feel in the air. This is a limitless city, with no complexes. Not much discipline, like in Italy, but on the other hand everything is filled with spirit” writes Claudio. The Knez Mihajlova Street is seen by this Italian gentleman as a kind of buffett, where you can find everything from “peaceful cafes, modern bars, certified restaurants, to jazz clubs, disco clubs, and street corner fun”.
POBEDNIK STATUE: The reader will meet numerous unknown and known details about the mansions that the capital offers.
“Rare are those who know that the Pobednik Statue was supposed to be a part of the Terazije Square layout, by the original idea of the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. But that upset the Belgrade ladies, who were appalled by the sculpture of a nude man, and wrote a letter to the then-mayor demanding that the sculpture be displayed at Kalemegdan” explains Radovanov.
NIGHT LIFE: The chapter named “The City That Never Sleeps” was not skipped even in this book, explaining that in Belgrade the warm-up starts with a coffee around 9 PM in one of the many cafes, around midnight you go to the clubs in the center or the floating river clubs called “splavovi” (rafts). Also, there is the Bohemian Quarter of Skadarlija, well-known for its gourmet meals and spirits, where Belgraders gather to discuss all kinds of subjects, have fun, but also write poetry, edit newspapers and make business deals. The publicist Slavko Golic reminds of their affinity to immoderate eating and drinking, because of which they are often “overly joyful” at weddings.
Beer is their favorite drink, so they made up the Beer Fest – “for all senses and everyone’s pocket”. Besides the fun, Belgrade has an extensive offer of culture events. The writer Jovan Cirilov explains in detail why the capital earned the title of a true Theatre City, and one of the international festival centers.
SPORT: The president of the Olympic Committee Ivan Curkovic and Dragan Stojkovic “Pixy”, the president of FC Red Star, explain vivaciously why Belgrade is one of the most-sporty cities in the world.
“Here, as soon as a child starts talking, everyone asks whether he or she is a Red Star or a Partizan fan, so the passion of the ‘Eternal Derby’ doesn’t really need any special explanation,” Pixy writes.
The wish to be the center of international events in water polo came true, and this year we entered the diamond era in tennis, too.
“Novak Djokovic gave me the most trouble while I was preparing this book. When I started he was 19th, but he continued to climb the ATP list, so I constantly had to edit the script. When I finally finished the book, he was fifth” Radovanov explains and laughs.
